On the Allotment and in the Garden in November
November is already upon us and they do say the weather could be
drier and slightly warmer than the end of October!! We have to remember
though there is always a chance of frost which could very well bring
an end to your summer displays in some parts of the country. Now is a
good time to insulate greenhouses with material such as Bubble Film which
will save on those fuel costs. Crop protection should also be thought
about and either Envirofleece or Enviromesh will prove useful.
VEGETABLES
Sowings can be made outdoors of broad bean Aquadulce Claudia while
the variety The Sutton can also be sown now but must be given the
protection of cloches. Continue planting suitable varieties of garlic
such as Solent White until the middle of the month.
Early variety of mangetout pea Oregon Sugar Pod can be sown under
cloches this month.
Overcrowded clumps of chive can be lifted and divided.
For a continuous supply of lettuce crops during winter plant varieties,
such as Rosetta and Vaila-Winter Gem, in pots, borders or growbags
and grow on in a warm greenhouse.
Watch out for potato blight The first symptoms seen are brown or
blackish irregular patches on the leaves which quickly spread resulting
in all the foliage collapsing.
FRUIT
Soft fruit can be planted in prepared ground that has well rotted
manure or garden compost incorporated.
Ripe apples should be picked and, depending on the variety, either
be eaten or stored in a cool, dry place until perfect.
Glue bands can be wrapped around fruit trees.
BULBS
Planting spring bulbs should be completed as early in the month as
possible, ensuring they are planted at the correct depth. Should
their final planting space not be quite prepared, then why not plant
the bulbs in large pots and so they can be planted out at a later
date.
Bean (Broad Bean) Aquadulce Claudia Seeds
Crops early with longer pods
Long podded, tasty and early to mature, this broad bean is recommended
for autumn sowings throughout the U.K. for the earliest crops the following
spring. RHS Award of Garden Merit winner. White seeded variety.
Culture: For earliest crops sow late October-November
in sheltered position. It is advisable to pinch out tips of plants
when first pods have set to deter blackfly. Packet sufficient for a
double
row of approximately 3.8m (12½'). 12-16 weeks maturity.
Hints: HEALTH BENEFITS: A source of vitamins A, C and E, plus protein and
fibre.
CULINARY TIPS: Cook pinched-out tips as a tasty alternative to
spinach
Garlic Solent Wight Bulbs
Grow tasty, plump garlic cloves
Solent Wight is a popular garlic that's well adapted to the British
climate and gives a good crop of large bulbs with plump tasty cloves. Expect
to start harvesting in July from a November planting - once the foliage starts
to turn yellow and dry.
Contains 2 bulbs, each bulb normally has 12-14 cloves. Softneck type.
Culture: The sections, or cloves of each bulb should be separated
and planted just below the soil surface from early November to
late December. Space rows 15-20cm (6-8") apart and allow 10cm
(4") between cloves. Lift and dry the plants, as with onions,
once the foliage turns yellow in July. Full growing instructions
included.
Hints: Now an essential part of so many kitchen gardens, with
excellent health benefits (lowering blood pressure, fat and cholesterol
levels and combating infections).
